The Story Behind Sophora Books

One day, while walking through a university campus, a particular tree among many others caught my eye. Its wide, sprawling branches and small, vibrant green leaves exuded a natural elegance. Standing under its shade, I found myself captivated by its beauty and whispered aloud, “Its so elegant, so beautiful.” Curious, I stepped closer to read the label attached to the tree. It was named:

"Sophora japonica, also known as the Scholar Tree."

The Scholar Tree, with its roots in wisdom and learning, holds deep cultural significance. In Korea during the Joseon Dynasty, it was traditionally planted in schools and academies, symbolizing knowledge and intellectual growth. From that moment on, the tree’s strength, elegance, and the sense of peace it evoked stayed with me, leaving an impression that I would carry for years.

When the time came to name my publishing company, the memory of the Scholar Tree returned. Publishing books is more than a task—it is an act of planting seeds of knowledge, nurturing them, and watching them grow into something greater. The symbolism of the Scholar Tree, with its connection to learning and growth, perfectly aligned with the vision I had for the company.

In Latin, this tree is called Sophora, a name that embodies the values of wisdom, growth, and transformation. Just as the Scholar Tree spreads its roots and branches far and wide, I hope that Sophora Books will spread knowledge, inspire curiosity, and enrich the minds of readers around the world.

At Sophora Books, every book we publish is a seed planted with care, destined to grow and flourish in the hearts and minds of those who read them.
