Read a Korean Literary Classic — Entirely in Korean, at Your Level

Sunja’s Spring (순자의 봄) is an A2-level Korean graded reader that brings one of Korea’s most beloved short stories to life. Set in a persimmon-tree village in the Korean countryside, it’s a warm, funny first-love story you can read from beginning to end — without a dictionary.

About this book

This book is part of the Korean Classic Reader series by Sophora Books. It retells Camellia Flowers (동백꽃) by Kim Yu-jeong (1936), one of the most cherished works of modern Korean literature.

The story follows a shy country boy who can’t understand why Sun-ja, the girl next door, keeps bothering him — pushing three dried persimmons on him, picking fights with his rooster, teasing him at every turn. He’s confused and a little annoyed. But one spring day, among the yellow sansuyu blossoms, he finally understands what all her teasing really meant.

It’s a gentle, humorous story about first love, misunderstanding, and the awkward, tender space between a boy and a girl who don’t yet know how to say what they feel.
